My Latest Book

Matt Jackson-Smith is part of a new generation of Yorkshire vets—a dashing James Herriot for the modern age. From watching the TV show *The Yorkshire Vet* with his grandma to becoming one of its most popular stars, Matt is forging an exciting life and career—both on and off screen.

In this enthralling memoir, Matt opens his casebook to reveal what life is really like as a Yorkshire vet in the 21st century. He shares his journey from being the son of a rugby league superstar to becoming one of TV’s most popular animal experts.

With stories from his childhood, his training and early career, through to his current success at work while starting a family of his own, Matt paints a fascinating picture of what it means to have one of the most satisfying—and most challenging—jobs in the world.

My life as a yorkshire vet is a funny, touching and engaging snapshot of Matt’s story so far – filled with anecdotes and heartwarming tales of life as a Yorskshire Vet, and beyond.

Authors note

I have been journaling and writing down my life and vet adventures now for many years, everything from little anecdotes to full stories. For many people covid changed a lot and it was from then my journaling really picked up the pace, as a way to reflect, remember and to maybe hopefully one day compound into a book. I never thought that door would open so soon and when it did I leaped at the opportunity. I love telling and hearing stories and I am so grateful to everyone that has helped me put it together. It is a book I am very proud of and whether you are an animal lover, a fan of the yorkshire vet, a student, a vet student, a vet, vet nurse, zoologist, whatever has brought you to this book I do hope you enjoy it and it gives you an insight into the veterinary world through my journey.

I liken veterinary medicine to a rollercoaster ride with its ups, downs, trials and tribulations and this may seem like quite a generic term, a lot of professions are like this, but the scales of the highs and lows in this profession are staggering. In these pages are very real stories, very real situations. Some are hilarious and lighthearted and others quite shocking and sad and they are all true.

Being a vet is a hard profession and one which I would never say to anyone to undertake lightly, but the opportunities it can present you with are endless. My career path has taken some unexpected and surprising turns with each new experience teaching me something about myself. I’m only 10 years qualified, only a quarter of the way through what I hope will continue to be a long and successful career, but I speak not knowing what the future holds for me, but right now, I am very lucky to be doing what I love. I have colleagues and friends who have travelled the world from Australia, New Zealand, Asia, all over the Americas. I know people who have left the clinical profession and gone into government work, business and setting up their own clinics, specialist referrals, specialist pathologies, pharmaceutical companies, the list continues. The veterinary world is changing at an exponential rate and where it and I will be in 50 years time, I genuinely don’t know, but to look back on these words in that time will be very interesting

Okay, so a lot of you have asked about this video, and yes, it was incredibly satisfying. This little guy had managed, all on his own, to pass this bladder stone from his bladder down into his cloaca (rear opening)… and unsurprisingly, it got stuck at the final hurdle. The only thing noticed beforehand was a small amount of blood when he passed a poo. It’s absolutely incredible he got this far, as many stones — especially at this size — require surgical removal, never mind one this mushroom shape! They’re made of urate crystals and can take months, and in this case, I suspect could be years to form.🐢🐢🐢😳😲And if you’re wondering what the pink appendage is… well, if you’ve never seen a tortoise penis before… you have now.#tortoise
